It’s critical to prime after new drywall installation or popcorn ceiling removal because the new mudded surface is porous and caulky. Drywall primers, also known as PVA primers, cover the joint compound or skim-coated drywall and provide a solid base for texturing or painting.
On larger areas of new drywall, we don’t recommend using paint and primer in one – however, these expensive paint products are good for smaller drywall patches and other purposes. The industry standard is to prime and coat patched drywall sections with a drywall sealer (primer). And especially in kitchens and bathrooms – applying a proper primer and sealer with help the adhesion of the paint and also prevent mold growth.
